Robots.txt

What is Robots.txt?

Robots.txt is a file websites use to provide instructions to web robots (web crawlers and bots) about which portions of the website should be indexed and/or crawled by search engines. It specifies which website pages, directories, and files these robots should not access.

Robots.txt is part of the Robots Exclusion Protocol, an internet standard allowing webmasters to control their website access from automated programs (such as search engine robots). This file can also be used to prevent search engine spiders from crawling all areas of a website, including pages that are not publicly accessible or are restricted in some way.

In the robots.txt file, site owners can specify which files and directories search engines may index or crawl and where they should not go. This helps ensure that only relevant content is indexed in the search results, minimizing irrelevant content from appearing in searches for your brand name or domain name.
